Small cuts of flexible PVC tubes, about 40 grams, was charged into 2 L of autoclave, together with 400 m1., NaOH solution. The mixture was heated, and when the desired temperature was reached, oxygen was then introduced into the autoclave. Gas pressure was maintained constant along the process. Sample was discharged every 30 minutes, and was determined its oxalic acid and chloride contents. Variables investigated are: temperature (175°-265°C), pressure (400-700 psi), and NaOH concentration (2.5-5 Molar), with up to 4 hrs of reaction time.
The results show that longer reaction time gives higher yields of oxalic acid and chloride. However, much longer time will reduce the yield. Increasing pressure, temperature and NaOH concentration also increases oxalic acid and chloride yields. Highest oxalic acid conversion attained is 11.44%, at 3 hrs reaction time, temperature of 250°C, pressure of 515 psi (35 atm) and 5 Molar NaOH solution. |
