Description
Summary:ABSTRACT Dr. Oen Surakarta Hospital is a private hospital with the highest number and occupancy of beds in its catchment area. The cost of inventory should be considered in a cost containment effort, especially when data on purchases and stocks are not monitored. This study addressed a research problem, whether higher volume of purchases of medical supply items produce accumulation of stock and low turnover of the items. The data used in the study were collected from the database of purchases and sales of medical supply items. The items where classified into 5 categoris according to their used: nursing, surgical, orthopedic, radiologic, and laboratory items. The volume of purchase is defined as the amount of annual purchase of an item, while inventory turnover is the ratio of annual sales of an item to the average value of stock. The study indicated a significant correlation between volume purchase and inventory turnover only for item belong to surgical (r = 0.293, p = 0.001), radiology (r = 0.764, p = 0.006), laboratory (r = 0.465, p = 0.0001) and orthopedy (r = 0.293, p = 0.0001). The higher the volume of purchase, the higher the inventory turnover, which suggested good management practice for the four categories of items. However, for nursing item there is no significant correlation between purchases and turn over. Data on purchases and inventory turnover could be used to monitor the efficiency of stock management, therefore the cost of inventory can be minimized.
