Summary:Selection of ion exchange as a technique for shoftening of water must consider several items such as rate of flow, quality of raw water, resin capacity, characteristics of resin hydraulic, duration of resin regeneration, type of operation (manuall or outomatically) and number of units. The important factor to determine size of ion exchange's structure is resin volume which are used in the process. There are many kinds of materials used as exchanger in water softhening, such as Natural greensand zeolite, Carbonaceous zeolite (Sulfonated Coal), and Synthetic gel zeolite as Zeolite, Phenolic resin, and Styerene as Resin. Both zeolite and resin as materials exchanger have certainly of ion exchanger capacity, kind of regenerant, and the efficiency of ion exchanger. Determining of material as ion exchanger need the laboratory research. Material as exchanger used in this research is Polystyrene as resin. The result shows that the total exchange capacity of the Polystyrene 1R-120 is 40,000 mg/I Ca at the 0.5 It/min flowrate. The exhausted resin riched at 22 hours operation.
