A thematic map compiled from a base map usually emphasize on a specific theme. Consequently the accuracy of the spatial information is not known well. This paper presents the use of handheld GPS for giving the georeference values and testing the accuracy of the position of the existing thematic map.
Handheld was used to obtain the coordinates of more than 35 selected objects on the Yogyakarta tourist map in scale 1115.000. Afterwards, the four points were used on 2D affine transformation. The accuracy of handheld observation can be known from its deviation. The testing for the map accuracy was done by comparing the coordinates values taken from survey and those taken from map reading.
This investigation shows that handheld can be used for giving georeference and for testing the accuracy of the thematic map in scale 1/15.000. Meanwhile, the testing of the thematic map accuracy shows. that the average of deviations is 27.54 m ± 20.14 m in the easting direction, while in the northing direction the average deviations is 27.23m ± 35.72m. Due to the generalization process during map production, those all the deviation can not be seen prominently.
