description One of the efforts to increase the economic value of castor oil is hydrolysis of the oil, producing fatty acids and glycerol. The common catalysts used in the reaction are acid, base, and enzyme solutions. The major obstacle in the application of such homogeneous catalysts is recovery of the catalysts. The problem might be overcome by utilization of solid catalysts, such as anion exchanger. A mixture of anion exchanger and pure water at specified concentration was heated to the reaction temperature. Meanwhile, a specified amount of castor oil was heated to the reaction temperature in a three-necked-flask-stirred-batchreactor. After the reaction temperature was attained, the anion exchanger � water mixture was poured into the reactor. Samples were withdrawn every fifteen minutes to be determined their free fatty acid concentrations in their oily phase. The data were used to calculate the conversions of reaction at various time, reaction temperature, and catalyst concentrations. The results showed that hydrolysis of castor oil was catalyzed by anion exchanger. The reaction followed the second order nucleophilic substitution (SN2) reaction mechanism. The rate of the reaction was proportional to the concentration of carbonyl groups of glycerides and the concentration of catalyst.
