Broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. botrytis L.) is a plant, which has been used as vegetable and drug, e.g. to prevent diabetes mellitus (DM). So, in therapy of DM, there is a possibility that broccoli and oral antidiabetic are used together. Broccoli contains some indole compounds able to induce cyto-chrome P-450. On the other hand, tolbutamide is metabolized by cytochrome P-450 enzymes. So that, broccoli consumption can alter tolbutamide biotrans-formation. The study of interactions between broccoli and tolbutamide has been performed to obtain information on the effect of pretreatment of broccoli on hypoglycemic effect of tolbutamide in type II DM rats.
The study was designed by employing a Completely Randomized Design One Way Classification. Diabetic rats were made by administration of intraperitoneal streptozotocin 90 mg/kg BW to neonatal rats. The rats were divided into two groups, i.e. control and diabetic rats. Both groups obtained the same treatments, i.e. negative control, the animals were given CMC Na 0.5% |
