description Worry about the adverse effects of crude oil contamination in agricultural land near oii boring sites is understandable, but how far it will affect plant growth and crop production is worth to be investigated under simulated laboratory and pot experiments. Two types of soil were employed in these experiments which was taken from the vincinity of the oil well in Rentang, West Java. The crude oil from this oil well is solid at room temperature so that soil contamination should be accomplished by using solvents such as gasoline on petroleum ether, or by heating to 45g -600 C. Direct contact of rice grain with crude oil at a temperature of about 450 C did not affect its germination ability, except for prolonged times (90 120 minutes). Residual water and distilled water from a mixture of crude oil and water, significantly inhibit growth of padi seed-lings. although its germination ability was not much affected. Contamination of soil with crude oil disolved in gasoline, showed that at a concentration of 1 % growth inhibition of rice seedlings already occured, but a further increase did not have additional effect. For soy-. beans, growth inhibition was not obtained until a concentration of 6 % was reached and further increase of concentration did show a greater inhibition. The growth of rice plants in inundated alluvial soil contaminated with crude oil for 35 days was clearly inhibited only at the highest concentrations of crude oil (25 % 30 %). but with grumosol, a concentration of only 1 % already showed significant inhibition. fiiiect contact of crude oil on leaves of rice and soybean did not generate symptoms of phytotoxicity but a solution of crude oil in petroleum ether as much as 4,6 la I /cm2 leaf-area significantly inhibit the growth of rice plants. Oil obtained from destilation of crude oil proved to he very phytotoxic to rice.
