Research to date found that sludge contained not only organic matter and plant nutrition but also some toxic compound and heavy metal. These toxic constituents may adversely affect watershed aquatic system that, in turn, will reduce quality of drinking water, fish and wildlife production, crop production, and water based recreation.
Because of its high nutrient and organic matter content, there will be a big opportunity to utilize sludge as fertilizer especially for forest land. However, for this practice to have broad utility and acceptance, it is critical that the research be conducted pertaining to silvicultural, forest floor and soil, hydrologic and wildlife responses, as well as operational and sociological considerations.
This paper addresses the needs that researchers and institutions should work closely to convince the public that forest lands should be considered as possible areas for recycling of sludge.
