Summary: | Fractal analysis of the seismic signals of Krakatau volcano using the data of the 1992-1997 eruptive activities was carried out. The aim is to investigate the properties of the persistent source of the volcanic seismic, signals beneath the active crater. The specific objective of this study was to quantify the excitation mechanism of the seismic signals.
The volcanic eruption was controlled by a system of deterministic dynamical equations of low dimensions (d2 < 4.0). The values of fractal dimensions calculated from the seismograms showed the number of degrees of freedom of the generation process. The higher values obtained in the early state of eruption activities mean that the system was initially governed by parameters with a larger number of degrees of freedom. The lower values obtained during the middle state of eruption activities indicate that the system was more selforganized by a low number of degrees of freedom of the dynamical parameters. Based on this analysis, the use of the fractal dimension of seismograms as a new parameter in forcasting the future eruptions is proposed.
