Malioboro is a well known as a historic street in Yogyakarta that also the busiest street in the town due to the high conzmercial activities. These commercial activities have led to the degradation of the visual character of the street, mainly due to the commercial signboards and new developments or refurbishments of the historical buildings in the districts.
The present study was aimed to identify the visual image of Malioboro through the perception of respondents who are familiar with the historical district. The study was done by utilizing visual research method by presenting various building facades and configurations to the respondents. Progresive selection was applied to narrow down and to select the appropriate images for further simulations, in which the respondents were asked whether the images could be perceived as the image of Malioboro or not.
Among others, the results show that the image of Malioboro is characterized by buildings which have wide openings, a line of columns, and continuous corridor at the ground floor. Two-story buildings with certain Colonial and Chinese were also perceived as the appropriate image of Malioboro.
