In the Neurology Unit of the Sardjito Central General Hospital, Yogyakarta, meningitis cases were admitted, either alone or as meningoencephalitis, 3% out of all cases admitted during 1983.
Blood culture, the examination of such material of the suspected as the source of infection and cerebrospinal fluid, sensitivity test of the microorganism were needed in order to determine the drug of choice. The difficulties are, unfortunately, many microorganisms were resistant to certain antibiotics. In addition, the microbiologic examination takes time, while the infection process is going on. So, as soon as the material was obtained, certain antibiotics were administered, which might be changed
according to the result of the sensitivity test.
