Description
Summary:The wayang kulit purwa performances at sadranan rite at Jogonalan District, Klaten Regency are still held by the groups of society members of 28 hamlets, four of which perform the Bratayuda story as the standard story for that ceremony, i.e. Crathak, Somopura, Pandansari, and Wonoboyo. The staging of the Bratayuda story at Gathak hamlet is aimed as a ruwatan which means to avoid the possible calamity. At the other three hamlets, it functions as a ruwatan aimed to avoid the possible crop failure. Given the very strong belief in the Bratayuda story as a symbol of the min unity resistor or as a symbol of the prosperity, the undesired incident happened at any hamlet which does not perform that story is. consisdered as an effect of the disobedience of that hamlet's members to stage that story. In addition, the Bratayuda story was considered as having a certain meaning, Le. as a symbol of the resistor of calamity threatening the human safety and symbol of the rice pest resistor as well. It seems that the Bratayuda story as a symbol of the calamity resistor is the maintaining of the meaning of the Bratayuda story staget at the bersih desa rite at Lemah Ireng and its surrounding area in Klaten Regency at about the end of the 19th century. It might seem that the Bratayuda story as a symbol of prosperity is an influence of the meaning of the wayang performance at the bersih dean ceremony dedicated to Dewi Sri (Goridevi of Rice). Key words: performing arts -- wayang kulit purwa - sadranan rite -Bratayuda story - symbol ruwatan.
