description | This research aims to make a comprehensive study of bongkel music, which is a said to be a forerunner of angklung and calung music of Banyumas. There is a sufficient proof to support this belief, for if we look in detail, these two types of bamboo music are closely related to bongkel. This can be clearly seen from the physical form of the instruments, the material used, the way in which the instruments are made, the tuning system, the compositional structure (form and composition of gendhing), and also the playing technique of several instruments.
Bongkel is a form of folk musik which is found in the village of Gerduren in the Banyumas area. It is played by a percussion instrument (a kind of bamboo angklung), tuned in the slendro tuning system. One frame consists of four tubes, tuned to different pitches, which are shaken and moved back and forth with both hands, while at the same time different pithes are produced by covering and uncovering certain fingerholes. The overall characteristic of bongkel playing is its interlocking rhythms. These rhytmic patterns were developed further and inspired the development of other bamboo musical ensembles such as angklung buncis, krunzpyung and calung.
The function of bongkel music was originally as private entertainment within the farming community, but later it developed into a kind of street music. Musically speaking, bongkel requires a highly developed playing technique, and it is unique in that is the only one of its kind, both in the Banyumas area and the rest of Indonesia.
Based on the above starting points, this study focusses on the musicological aspects, and aims to discover the truth about the origins of bongkel music and describe its influence on other bamboo musical genres which appeared subsequently
Key words: bongkel - bamboo music - rhytmic pattern
