Summary:ABSTRACT The existence of the elderly in the family, in the later part of the decade have become the subject of discussion. Often it is not merely caused by the increasing number of elderly, but also, it is related to whom must be responsible to the caring and serving of them, in the middle of changing streams and their weakened condition. The extended family and the nuclear family whom the expect to provide help and care are no longer reliable. In general, this study aims to know some changes in Minangkabau society, relating to the problem regarding service to the elderly parents, primarily by members of the family who should be responsible for them. In particular, it describes some changes in the economic, social, and cultural aspects, as well as the personal factors of the elderly over the years.This study is descriptive-explorative in nature, and uses the qualitative approach. Data were collected by means of a free interview and limited observation. This study is also provided by literary studies. The result of this study showed that the changes in the economic, social, and cultural aspects, and the personal factors of the elderly parent have had a strong influence on the reinterpretation of social responsiblility to the elderly parent and uncle. Many of them whom should have been served in their own family, in fact, they were indeed placed in the nursing home. The economic and religion factors were dominant and the most influential. The orientation of family life changed from "family oriented" to "economy oriented". Key words: elderly � reinterpretation � responsible, and religion
