Summary:ABSTRACT The study aims at giving a through description about the economic behavior of warung tenda traders in Kotta Barat Surakarta. The problems of the study include: (1) the marketing.behavior, (2) the behavior of the productional organization, and (3) the social network. This study is expected to give contribution to the local governmen for economic policy-making related to the community's existence and role. In addition, this study is also expected to give contribution to the development of social, particularly the one related to the cultivation of people's economy in urban area. In order to get a through understanding of the traders, the study employs the qualification method by means of participatory obvervation and indepth interviewing. The informations are determined by means of snowball technique. The collected data is analyzed by means of interpretative technique, exposing the elements related to the people's economic behavior. The outcome of the study shows that there are two different marketing techniques, namely: mystical or spiritual technique and the rational one. Some traders believe that they can invite customers by using the mystical or spiritual ways. Some others believe that in order to invite customers they have to use the rational ways, such as: choosing the busy location, binding inexpensive materials, improving the taste, and keeping the environment clean.
