Summary: | Distillation is process widely used in petroleum refinery and chemical industries and is often the major energy consumer. Hence, high energy efficiency becomes the objective for process designer. One of the procedures for energy saving improvement in distillation column is the use of pump around. It allows that part of the liquid exiting on a stage is withdrawn and circulated through a cooler before returning to the upper stage. The advantage obtained using this configuration is that the heat can be removed from middle part of the column.
The purpose of this paper is to characterize changing vapor-liquid traffic in the column due to installing of pump-around. The effectiveness of pump around is also demonstrated at several plates of the column. The result shows that the effective plate for pump around is when vapor-liquid traffic over the whole column is uniformly distributed.
