Summary: | Geriatrics as a multidisciplinary science involves clinical, preventive medicine, social, and managerial approaches to improve the health of the elderly. The United Nation defined 60 years of age as a transition to old ages. The need for specialists dealing with geriatric health problems has been realized, comparable to pediatrics who have long been established as specialists of child health, the other end of age groups, with organ based specialist. The clinical specialists (geriatrists), trained in the department of internal medicine, should provide medical care in collaboration with other concerned disciplines. In Sardjito General Hospital a team-work has been involved in providing medical care to owned be the Ministry of Welfare, and organizing one credit semester come in geriatrics for medical students of Gadjah Mada University. The article discusses the importance of three programs for geriatrics care, namely human resource development (education and training in geriatrics), health care wdh a referral system, and social support
