Summary: | ABSTRACT
The objective of this research was to study the reaction kinetics and the effects of various factors on the air oxidation of pyrite in ferric sulfate solution. The process was carried out continousty in a tube reactor with moving bed in order to obtain an efficient and effective processing method. The variable studied were air velocity, temperature, concentration of pyrite suspension, and concentration offer- ric sulfate. Based on the results obtained, when air velocity and temperature were varied, the rate of reaction was controlled by chemical reaction step. Within the range of variables studied, the effect of temperature followed Arrhenius equation, while both pyrite suspension and ferric sulfate concentration affected the reaction rate constant logarithmically.
Processing of the product to sulfate salts (ammonium and pottasium sulfate) was much easier than separation of the free sulfuric acid from iron sulfates.
Key words: kinetics - air oxidation - pyrite
