Over recent years the method of detecting trace gases using the Photoacoustic ( PA ) technique has developed very well and low detection limit ( sub-ppb ) can be achieved now. In many agricultural processes, trace gases play an important role such as C2H4 ( ethylene ) as a growth hormone in plants ) thereby a sensitive .method for their detection is essential in studying the processes. The combination of a PA cell and an infra - red laser with the cell placed inside the laser cavity ( so called Intra-Cavity set-up) enabled the detection of C2 H4 at enhanced sensitivity required for detecting C2H4 produced by a single seed. Using the IC - PAS, the role of 02 and N2 in the production of C2 Ns by a tomato fruit became evident and complied with biosynthesis pathway known from literature. The high sensitivity of the system allowed more detailed study of the production of C2 H4 by different parts of the tomato. It was found that the coronet part of the tomato is largely responsible for the production of C2 H4. It produces 94 % of the total amount of C2 144 production |
