Description
Summary:ABSTRACT: Abalones (Haliotis spp.) are large gastropods which inhabit the shallow rocky sublittoral zone in temperate and tropical waters. Some of the members of the genus Haliotis are of commercial importance on account of the value of their muscular foot as food. Abalones are generalist herbivores and eat many kinds of macroalgae but they show distinct preferences if offered a choice. Australian species prefer red macro-algae rather than brown, whereas abalones from North America and Japan prefer brown rather than red macroalgae. Growth rate of abalones are influenced by many factors. Temperature, salinity and the food supply are considered to be the most important. The most suitable temperature for growth is 22-30 °C and 15-22 °C for warm waters and cold waters species, respectively. The growth rate is faster in abalones living in salinities between 30-35 °/. Several species of Haliotis fed with various formulated diets grew faster than those fed with natural algae. Key Words: food - growth - haliotis
