Of all the human herpes viruses described to date, infection with_cytomegalovirus arguably is the most important cause of morbidity and mortality in some population. Although primary infection with this agent generally is asymptomatic in healthy adults, several high-risk groups, including immunocompromised organ transplant recipients and individual infected with HIV, are at risk of developing life-and sight-threatening cytomegalovirus disease. in addition CMV has emerged in recent years as the most important cause of congenital infection, commonly leading to mental retardation and developmental disability.
The aim of the study, is to have cytomegalovirus viruria frequency data in mental retardation of child population.
Urine samples were obtained from mental retardation children. Preparation of samples and sera (polyclonal antibody) was performed by standard method, and detection of CMV antigen in urine sediment was done by Indirect Immunofluorescence Antibody Technique (IFAT).
From 82 mental retardation children with age between 6 to 15 years, cytomegalovirus viruria were found in 16 (19,51 %) of the subjects.
