| Summary: | State Islamic University (UIN) Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, as a religious institution and an intellectual community, for a few decades has been only regarded as marginal and conservative community. This is because State Islamic University (UIN) only focuses on religious study, which has distance from contemporer reality. Because of this problem, then there is phenomenon on the Islamic dynamical thoughts of student community in State Islamic University (UIN) "Sunan Kalijaga" Yogyakarta, from classical thoughts pattern�discussion about Islamic doctrine exclusively�to modem thoughts pattern �discussion discussion about Islamic doctrine inclusively. Sociologically, this research discusses on phenomenon of Islamic thoughts liberalization of State Islamic University (UIN) Yogyakarta students.
As for the Liberalization of Islamic thoughts of State Islamic University (UIN) "Sunan Kalijaga" Yogyakarta, students reflect dilemma that emerges amongst students who are marginalized by modernization (political development and politics of state development). Beside, it is also alienated by their thoughts: traditional, normative, and rigid thoughts. As a result, the liberalization of Islamic thoughts of students in State Islamic University (UIN) Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta emerges from their nervousness as consequence from their role that marginalized from public spaces and state hegemony that restrict for their existence, and also impact of the role of their educational institution that restricts their independence and thoughts freedom. Their existence which continuously marginalizes them from public space, and state hegemony, eventually emerges courage to explore discourse and enlightenment dialogue. The experience of this social marginalization motivates to reflect consciously social facts. In religion context, this process can motivate to bear "secularization of thoughts" or in Habermas's perspective,
he called a process of rationalization.
