| Summary: | . .In 1983 several researchers identified a retrovirus that is now understood to be HIV as the cause of AIDS. Much information has been learned about the clinic-al history of HIV infection and about the dimensions of the epidemic. In this paper, we focus on some important aspects of the disease and the epidemic in areas in which new data have either confirmed or altered initial impressions or in which a deeper understanding of the disease has emerged. These areas include the causative agent of AIDS, HIV infection as a continuous conditions, the mode and efficiencies of transmission and the prevalence of HIV infection.
