| description | Background: One way to reduce cost of health services is increased use of generic drug. For that reason. the choice of prescribing generic drug or non-generic one among medical practitioners was studied.
Methods: This study acquired 75 respondents constituting 35 general practitioners. 22 specialists, and 113 dentists. 26 of 75 medical practitioners worked simultaneously in public government hospital. private hospital, and private practice in Magelang.
Results: There was insignificant difference in the choice Of generic and non-generic prescriptions between dentist and medical practitioner in public government hospital and private hospital. However. the choice of prescribing generic drug was significantly higher than that of non-generic one among medical practitioners. By contrast, the choice of prescribing non-generic drug were significantly higher than generic one among specialists and medical practitioners in private practice . The choice of prescribing generic drug was more affected by experience and subjective norm that insists on prescribing it rather than favorable attitude toward the drug. The choice of prescribing non-generic drug was more affected by experience and favorable attitude toward the drug rather than subjective norm that insists on prescribing it. Choice pattern with its components that affect were different for each group of
- profession and work place.
Conclusion: All groups studied said that efficacy was the most important determinant for choosing drug to prescribe, and they were in common opinion that generic drug was significantly less effective than non-generic drug.
