Summary: | Background: The Drug Therapeutics Committee (DTC) is a sub-committee under the Hospital Medical Committee, who has the responsibility for providing scientific information to hospital managers regarding quality use of drugs. They also have the responsibility to encourage and promote the rational use of drug. Such important role needs valid and reliable performance indicators, which could be used for self-evaluation and could be routinely used to measure their performance from time to time. The existing DTC performance indicator has been developed in Australia, these indicators should be modified to Indonesian condition for proper adoption. Needed modification is mainly caused by existing function and responsibility of DTC in Indonesia, which are far from ideal and do not really resemble practices in other countries. This study was aimed to develop DTC performance indicators based on Weeks indicator and to field test the final indicators.
Methods: The DTC performance indicator was developed based in three steps. First, translating the Weeks indicators and then modify them based on the national DTC guideline and literature review. Result of the first step underwent Delphi I, involving four hospital DTCs and a clinical pharmacologist. From Delphi I, it turned out that the indicators needed to be revised, and the questions were changed into close ended. After revision, the indicators underwent Delphi II, involving the same group of experts. Result of Delphi II was then revised, producing the final DTC performance indicators. The final indicators were then field tested in twelve hospital DTCs.
Results: The result of field test showed that the final DTC performance indicators were feasible to be used for self-assessment. More than 80 % respondents expressed that these indicators reflect the real situation. The final indicators were presented separately as annex 5. All DTCs involved in the field test appreciate the easiness in using the indicators.
