description | Synthetic plastics, such as PVC, gives rise problems to the environments due to their non-biodegradability. The aim of this research is to study the characteristics of PVC batch pyrolysis. The retort for pyrolysis is provided with electric heater, cooling water, liquids and gas products collectors. The PVC materials pyrolyzed are flexible tube, plastics film and granular PVC. The pyrolysis temperature was varied between 500° - 700°C. The experiment was stopped when no more liquid condensate was produced. Total liquid and solid products were weighed, while gas product was measured volumetrically. The absorbed HCl gas was determined by NaOH standard solution. It is concluded that the amount of gas, liquid and solid products depended upon the temperature of pyrolysis and the kind of PVC material. Gas product contains HCl but no chlorine gas. Liquid product showed black color, which probably contained a number of double bonds and |
