The aim of this experiment was to evaluate effect of a probiont, Bacillus sp. on the density of Vibrio sp. in rearing water and hepatopancreas of Penaeus monodon, as well as on the total organic matter in the rearing water. Bacillus sp. was isolated from rearing water of shrimp. This probiont was added to water rearing and feed of P monodon juveniles. The density of Vibrio sp. in rearing water and hepatopancreas, as well as the total organic matter in rearing water were evaluated. Results indicated that Bacillus sp. either in feed or rearing water decreased the number of Vibrio sp. The number of Vibrio sp. in hepatopancreas was 4x101 cells/g, lower than that of control, 8x101cells/g. Total organic matter in the treated rearing water was lower (95 ppm) than that of control (143 ppm).
Key words: Bacillus sp., Penaeus monodon, total organic matter, Vibrio sp.
