description | Background: Seeded banana 'Musa balbisiena Collar fruit had been known to have preventive and curative effect on gastric ulcer induced by acetosal. How does it elicit these effects have not been known yet. Objective: The study was intended to know whether the ethanolicio extract of seeded banana fruit has any effect. on gastric acid secretion in vivo.
Methods: Forty two female Wistar rats which wore 4. - 6 months age, f 40 - 179 g in weight were divided into 7 groups each of 5 rats. After 7 days acclimatization the rats were fasted for 48 hours in a special cage to prevent coprophagy. During the fasted period the rats were given usual drinking water ad libitum. Under other anesthesia rats were dissected to fit a silk unfixed lasso on its pylorus. The wound was then closed by mean of catgut suture in such a way that the end of the lasso was exposed. After the surgery rat was given with a test substance according to their groups. Group I, 11,111, IV, V, VI and VII was consecutively given with 0.2 water, 20 mg/kg8W, 40 mgikg8W, 80 mgikgBW of cimetidine or 15 mg/kgSW, 30 rrigikgEW, 60 mg/kg8W of ethanolic extract of seeded banana. The test substances were given orally 4 times a day for 48 hours. In the next day the exposed silk lasso were used to close pylorus. Five hours later the animal was killed by mean of neck dislocation_ its abdomen was opened and the stomach was taken atter fixing an esophagus ligature. The volume of rat gastric juice was measured and then titrated using 0.002 N NeOH and phenophthalein as indicator to determine the H. concentration in the gastric juice.
Result: Compared to distilled water, both cirneudine and ethanolic extract of seeded banana significantly {p |
