The research aims is to study the physical development of Kediri city during a seven year period from 1996 to 2003. The objectives of the research are (1) to study the distribution of physical development of Kediri city, (2) to study the factors which affect the physic.al development of Kediri city, and (3) to study the trend of the physical development of Kediri city. This zoning is intended to observe the spatial variety of urban physical development This research employed a survey method directed to spatial approach, with special reference to spatial proses analysis.
The research result are presented in the following:
(1) The distribution of physical development shows that during this 7 year periodthe biggest reduction of land use is in the irrigated rice-f iehis, while an increase of land use is for settlement. The proportion of change of land use is as follows: 42.05% and 55.40% in suburban area (mojorato and Pesantren districts respectively), which are bigger than in the centre of Kediri city (in Kota district). which is 2.55%,
(2) There are three independent factors that influence the physical development of Kediri City from 19% to 2003. That factors arc accessibility (with significant levels of 0.01 and 0.05). land characteristics (with significant levels of 0.01 and 0.01), and public service (with significant levels of 0,02 and 0.01).
(3) The trend of the physical development is toward northwest and south-east, dominated by south-east direction based on the proportion of land use per district)_
