description | This research intends to measure the potential significance of urban agriculture for providing sufficient amounts of vegetables needed by the local population in three suburbs (Maribyrnong, Footscray and Seddon) in the City of Maribyrnong, one of the most socially disadvantaged municipalities in Melbourne, Australia. This study mainly used secondary data as the main data sources and Geographic Information System (GIS) as the analysis tool. The results show that Maribyrnong and Footscray, which have lower density and more varied built forms than Seddon, can meet the annual local demand for vegetables by utilising less than half of their current vacant spaces. Seddon can potentially produce 93% of the local demand by using all its existing vacant spaces. This research supports further development of urban agriculture in the City of Maribyrnong or any other municipalities in Metropolitan Melbourne. The promising role of urban agriculture defined in this research should also be explored in Indonesian cities. This also should be accommodated in the land use planning policies.
