description The main problems in wood products is the low quality of wood due to timber harvest too early or because of the wood characteristic, but it is still running because the demand of wood products tend to increase in line with the high population growth rate. Several measures have been taken to overcome it such as modifi cation treatment in order to improve low quality of wood. High quality of wood was obtained by giving variety of heat treatment including heat treatment methods and time of heating have done to meet industrial standard of wood. The objective of this research was to improve the quality of wood with modification treatment by heat treatment so that can get the better of physical properties, and mechanical properties, which can increase the value of the product. To get the optimum properties and quality of wood , we made a variation on the heat method and time of heat treatment. The testing of products include physical properties (moisture content, discoloration, density and dimensional changes), and mechanical properties (modulus of rufture / MoR and modulus of elasticity / MoE). The results show that the method of heat treatment factors affect the moisture content, discoloration, and development of radial direction on African wood. Meanwhile, the time of heating affect on moisture content and discoloration. The longer duration of heating, the lesser moisture content and the higher discoloration will be. The value of Density, Modulus of Refture, and Modulus of Elasticity were not affected significantly in the method and time of heat treatment applied.
