Description
Summary:Backyard farming is a common practice of livestock husbandary in Indonesia. The livestock manure is usually abandoned next to the barn untreated. The manure has a potential source to spread pathogenic microbes related to zoonosis diseases. The present study aimed to build a compact polyethylene digester for treating the manure and review its potential role on reducing pathogenic microbes (such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., and Lysteria monocytogenes) for controlling zoonotic diseases. A compact high-density polyethylene tank which has 5,100 litre volume was used as fixed-dome digester. The manure from approximately three heads of cattle was fed to the digester daily. After 14 days of anaerobic fermentation, the digester yields biogas as renewable energy and fertilizer for organic farming. The digester plays another important role to reduce methane as greenhouse gas which relates to global warming. The digester also produces heat which could omit Salmonella and L. monocytogenes since day-8 and day-6, respectively. The reduction level of E. coli is considerably lower than those two pathogens. Thus, treating livestock manure using anaerobic fermentation method is not only contribute for sustainable agriculture, but also beneficial to control zoonotic diseases.
