Summary: | The aims for this research are to: (1) identify the characteristics of the region, natural resources and the people in Gunungsewu Karst Area, (2) identify the effects of dryness towards people's life, and (3) determine an . ecological adaptation strategy to overcome the drought in Gunungsewu Karst Area. The research is a qualitative one which uses an ecological approach. Data were taken by performing observation, indepth interview, Focused Group Discussion (FGD) and a study on secondary data. Data analysis was done by filtering field findings into information units and synthesizing it into theme, then terminated by inducting the theme into a concept formula which related with the topic of research. The result of the research indicates that Tepus Subdistrict is an arid and infertile area with a very little water surface and a very deep spring which causes a dryness every year. The impacts of the drought to the people's life are: water rarity in dry beason, low productivity of natural resources and low income. Therefore, the society has been doing three strategic patterns of ecological adaptation as an innovation to overcome the drought, namely: (a) The pattern of natural resources management done by the people by managing water resources based on cultural values and environmental wisdom, and managing farming lands by applying "tumpangsari" planting pattern
