Summary: | In an attempt to realize Bantul Regency's vision of becoming a prosperous, democratic and religious region, which isfree from prostitution, the local government enacted Local Regulation No. 5 / 2007 on the Prohibition of Prostitution, which came into effect on May 1, 2007. However, the regulation has so far proved ineffective to solve the problem of prostitution. The implementation of the regulation, has been characterized by improper arrests carried out Civil Service Police Force, a problem that has sent prostitution activities underground. Consequently, risk of spreading sexually diseases has increased. Moreover, community health centers have failed to deliver regular services to sex workers because they no longer live in Parang Kusuma. Irregularity of health services provided by community health centers has led to incomplete treatment of patients. Worse still, NGOs offering reproductive health assistance services have decided to terminate their services for fear of being accused of flouting the regional regulation on prostitution.
