description Unit commitment is a scheduling problem of thermal generating unit over a certain period, to satisfy system load and spinning reservce requirement. Unit commitment is aimed to determine hourly thermal unit status that yields minimum generation cost subject to operational contraints. In this research, a new approach using fuzzy dynamic programming was developed for the unit commitment. To reach an optimal commitment schedule under the fuzzy environment, total generating cost and spinning reserve contraint were all expressed in fuzzy set notation. Fuzzy dynamic programming could produce various optimal schedule, making the method superior to the conventional dynamic programming which gave only one optimal schedule.
