Summary:Obesity is a difficult situation to be handled so that prevention and recognition of risk and protective factors is important. Breastmilk is the best source of nutrition for infants. Breastmilk cause the baby to grow naturally and tend to gain weight according to their needs which may reduce the incidence of obesity in children. The aim of this study is to determine the protective effect of breastfeeding on the incidence of obesity in children aged 6 to 8 years old and know the effect of breastfeeding duration on the incidence of obesity in children aged 6 to 8 years. The design of this study was case control study to compares the cases of children obese group with control group of non-obese children. The factors measured in this study is a history of breastfeeding and infant formula milk and duration of breastfeeding. After the measurement of nutritional status, subjects are given a questionnaire and data obtained from questionnaires were analyzed to determine the influence of breastfeeding as a protective factor of obesity in children aged 6 to 8 years. There were 136 children aged 6 to 8 years old consisting of 68 obese subjects and 68 non-obese subjects with matching age and sex consisted of 47 (69.1%) boys and 21 (30.9%) girls. Significant differences have seen in comparison of formula milk with exclusively breastfeeding until 6 months of age on the incidence of obesity in children aged 6 to 8 years (OR 6.29, 95% CI: 4.67 to 7.73, p = 0.007), as well as when compared between partial breastfeeding and non-exclusive breastfeeding with exclusive breastfeeding (OR 4.70, 95% CI: 3.96 to 5.43, p = 0.001 and OR 4.86, 95% CI: 4.13 to 5.59
