description | After ICPD meeting in 1994 a fundamental change took place in each
development policy as indicated by the emphasis on gender equality and equity.
One of the gender responsive policies in the area of health was manifested in male
involvement program that emphasized the participation and the responsibility of
men in sexual and reproductive health. There were three approaches in the
implementation of the policy. One of them considered men as wives partners. It
put the emphasis on the importance of the role played by men/husbands as
partners in supporting their wives and children in improving their health status. It
was manifested among others in their participation in caring for the pregnancy,
delivery and postpartum of their wives and for their young baby. However, not all
of the husbands involved in such activities.
The study was conducted by statistically analyzing the factors relates to
the participation of husbands in caring for the pregnancy, delivery and the
postpartum of their wives and for their young baby in Indonesia, especially the
gender relationship between husbands and wives in their family life (as measured
by the decision making in four areas of household) and their sociodemographic
characteristic (age, residence, education level, occupation, mass media exposure,
children latest status, and the sex of the latest children). The data source was the
results of SDKI of 2007. The data is processed that meet the sample criteria: a
married man, having at least one child and last child was born five years before
the survey (n = 3479). The statistic tests were chi-square (c2) and logistic
regression. The probability and the correlation direction were observed from odd
ratio (OR) with confidence interval (CI) of 95 percent (p0.05).
The results of the multivariable analysis showed that the gender relation
between husbands and wives in their family life affect to husbands participation
in pregnancy care, especially the husbands age 25-44 year-old (p0,001) and 45-
54 years-old (p0,05), living in urban (p0,001) and rural (p0,001), worked as
farmers (p0,001), 0-6 years of education (p0,001), exposed to mass media (p
0,001), babies who were born was the third son (p0,05) and fourth or more
(p0,001) of any gender. In the delivery care, gender relatioan bentween
husbandsand wives in their family life also affect to the husbands participation,
particularly in the husband from 25-44 years of age (p0,001), living in rural areas
(p0,05), worked as a farmer (p0,05), 0-6 years of education (p0,05), exposed
to mass media (p0,05), babies who are born is the second (p0,05) and fourth or
more (p0,05) and the male rate (p0,001). In addition of the postpartum care of
their wives and for their young baby care, gender relation between husbands and
wives in their family life decided to the husbands participate or no participate,
particularly in the age group 15-24 years (p0,001) and 25-44 years (p 0,001),
living in rural areas (0,001), worked as a farmers (p0,001) or blue-collar
(0,001), primary (p0,001) and medium (p0,05) level of education, exsposed to
massa media (p0,001), babies who are born is the first child (p0,05), second
(p0,001) and fourth (p0,001), regardless of gender (p0,001). |
