Parangtritis Street that serves as the link for the area of Yogyakarta and Bantul also serves as the tourism track. As Parangtritis Street being developed as the part of northern-southern corridor of Yogyakarta, so it is important to introduce the special characteristics of the area behind the corridor, one of which is the Prawirotaman-Tirtodipuran area. The Prawirotaman-Tirtodipuran area is known as the tourism village because there is a batik industry center as well as the tourism supporting facilities (amenities). Today’s condition makes the development of tourism activities tend to occur within the area, while along the corridor the street has already mingled with the pure commercial activities. Besides, the spread of the tourism function along the corridor relatively small. Introducing the special characteristics of the area along the corridor becomes important to be done. The most easily observed characteristics or special characteristics is the physical shape because the visual impression is something that is easily absorbed or digested by the human memory. The dominant physical characteristic toward the visual impression and could be the representative of the environment existence is the identity of the area. Identity is the other terms as a character. Therefore, the research aims to (1) Analyze the characters of the area visually as the character which would be introduced, (2) analyze the character of the Parangtritis Street corridor, and (3) give the appropriate direction to create the visual unity on the corridor along the Parangtritis Street so that the street could be the reflection of the PrawirotamanTirtodipuran area. The research method that was used is the qualitative description of Finding the area’s characteristic and the street corridor, according to the dominance from each research variable. While for making the direction, the researcher made the direction based the data’s dialogue, by finding the appropriateness rate between the area and the street corridor, and finding the potential points of the corridor to be implemented by the area’s characteristic. The result of the research showed that the character of an area or that of the corridor visually made from the building’s style/custom style and the out-of-the-building setting. While for maintaining a character, it is necessary to know the appropriateness rate, the in-harmony rate, or the existence of the contextual. Contextual here did not mean should be the same but the contextual could also mean contrast but in harmony. The contextual impression was poured on the implementation of the area’s characteristics upon the potential points of the street corridor. Key words: tourism corridor, visual, contextual |
