Summary: | Production of particleboard is one of the solution to reduce deforestry for
fulfill increasing wood demand. To obtain fine properties of particleboard, some
studies must be conducted by utilizing natural fiber which is abundant available,
low price and have good tensile properties. The present study aims to investigate
effect of sugar palm (Arenga pinnata) fiber on mechanical properties of teakwood
particle board.
Sugar palm fiber were put as layers with direction of 0°, 45° and 90°, and
various content of 10%, 20% and 30% by weight of teakwood particles and with
urea formaldehyde as glue content of 15% by weight of raw materials. Particle
board materials were pressed at temperature of 120°C and pressed of 3.71 MPa
during 10 minutes in order to obtain specimens.
The test results show that addition and direction of sugar palm fiber
negatively effect on density, bonding strength, modulus of elasticity and modulus
of rupture properties, however on the contrary positively effect on to water
absorption and thickness swelling after 24 hours soaking. The best value is shown
by particle board made with sugar palm fiber content of 10% and direction of 0°.
The test results show that density, water absorption, thickness swelling, internal
bonding, modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture are 0.67 g/cm³, 43.33%,
11.21%, 0.96
