description A key aim of Sierra Leone`s Security System Transformation process has been to balance the power of the security forces with strengthened civilian decision making bodies and an enhanced role for the justice sector. In September 2010, the UN Security Council lifted the last remaining sanctions against Sierra Leone saying the government had fully re-established control over its territory, and former rebel fighters had been disarmed and demobilised. This research provides updated report on the situation of security governance in the country. The findings in this thesis suggests that major security institutions have continued to improve, with the UN providing substantial input in developing appropriate policing standards, while armed forces reform has advanced. There are also improvements in the justice sector and efforts have been made to achieve democratic and civilian control of the security sector.
