Description
Summary:Arid and barren environmental condition and economic pressure force commmunity to take a variety of activities to overcome the problem by exploiting forest. Such activities were previously individual, using simple method of exploitation. Eventually, they become communal activities to provide economic, environmental, and social benefits. The sustainability of the community gives profound impacts on the sustainability of based community forest management. The study aimed at examining some factors related to the implementation of sustainable community-based forest at Giripurno Village, Karanganyar Subdistrict, Kebumen Regency . It was using inductive-qualitative approach to explore the phenomena. Data were analyzed by descriptive-qualitative ways. The study found three concepts that contribute to sustainable community-based forest in Giripurno Village. The first is the change in the condition of community forest that can be categorized into three, i.e. arid and barren condition, neglect of wood plants, and community forest with institutional management. The second is the change in the social behavior influenced by the benefits derived by the society, changing motivation, obstacles faced by the society, stimulants and managements of the community forest. The third is increase in the self-confidence and autonomy of the society, influenced by the shaping of the social behavior, social capacity and institutional roles. The development of community forest at Giripurno Village is still limited by some obstacles that may threaten the sustainability of the community forest. The limitations include local wisdom in terms of needbased tree falling, inadequate labor, and low level of education among the society members. Alternatives for empowering economy of the society, optimizing the institutional roles for community forest management, and providing intensive instruction for Giripurno society in developing the community forest are required in the effort of realizing sustainable, maintained, and optimal community.
