mortality. Anemia allegedly contributing to the decline in cognitive function in
elderly. This study aims to examine the correlation between hemoglobin levels and
cognitive function measured by MMSE score in the elderly population at Tresna
Werdha social residence of Yogyakarta Province.
Methods: Cross sectional analysis performed in 119 elderly people aged � 60 years
that match with inclusion criteria. The definition of anemia is determined according
to WHO criteria, anemia in men if the hemoglobin level <13 g / dL and <12 g / dL in
women. MMSE test was performed to assess cognitive function and considered to
decrease when MMSE score � 24.
Results: Based on the characteristics, the proportion of subjects aged � 70 years 77
(64.7%), the proportion of anemia in men 13 (34.2%) with median hemoglobin level
13.4 (5.9-17.1) and women 38 (46.9%) with median hemoglobin level 12.0 (5.0-
14.5). The correlation coefficient in men for hemoglobin and cognitive function was
0.338 (p=0.038) with R2 =0.086 (p=0.005) and women 0.307 (p=0.005) with R2
=0.093 (p=0.003). The correlation coefficient for age and cognitive function in men
was -0.334 (p = 0.04) and women -0.249 (p = 0.025). Beta on multivariate analysis
for anemia and cognitive function decline in men was 7.0 (95%CI 1.277-38.35, p =
0.025) and in women 3.636 (95%CI 1.279-10.337, p = 0.015). Beta on multivariate
analysis for age and cognitive function decline in men was 3.326 (95% CI 0.75-
14.61, p = 0.112) and in women 3.682 (95%CI 1.284-10.552, p = 0.015).
Conclusions: There is a weak positive correlation between hemoglobin and cognitive
function based on MMSE score in elderly populations. |
