Summary: | Bengkalis Regency has high potential of natural resources including many
big rivers with sands and natural stones. These materials are also found in
Tanjung Balai Karimun Regency Riau Islands Province which located adjacent to
Bengkalis Regency and have a great potential for the development of roads and
other infrastructures. At present, stones and sands from those areas have started to
be used as material for asphalt mixture. However, the feasibility test for these
materials to be used as a mixture of asphalt pavements has not been performed.
Therefore, this study aimed to determine the quality and test the feasibility of aggregate
material from the granites of Tanjung Balai Karimun and sands of Sungai Injap Rupat
Bengkalis to be used on the type of asphalt concrete (AC-Wearing Course).
This research was performed by making specimens with a mixture of ACWC
design. Several stages of testing was conducted on these specimens i.e., test
of the asphalt characteristics by using a Marshall test to obtain the optimum
asphalt content, test of immersion durability by standard immersion period (0.5 hours),
24 hours and 48 hours at 60 °C, and test of the asphalt tensile strength (Indirect Tensile
Strength) by 24 hours immersion at 60 °C (ITS condition) and without immersion (ITS
uncondition). Then, from the immersion test result, the index value of immersion can be
defined in a mixture of AC-WC correlated with the durability of the mixture.
The experimental results showed that the characteristics of the surface layer
of asphalt concrete (AC-Wearing Course) using river sands derived from
Bengkalis Regency and granites from Tanjung Balai Karimun Regency are
eligible for use. The coarse aggregates abrasion value of 33.2% can comply with
the provisions of the Public Works Department in 2007 where the maximum
abrasion value was set to 40%. The fine aggregates of sands from Sungai Injap
with water absorption value of 0.603 also have met their requirements of the
maximum value 3.0. Marshall Test with a standard immersion period (0.5 hours),
24 hours, and 48 hours at 60 °C with KAO value of 5.725 also showed results in
accordance with the requirements of technical specifications set by the Public
Works Department in 2007. In conclusion, the results of this study indicated that
the material derived from Bengkalis Regency and Tanjung Balai Karimun
Regency can be used as a reference or an alternative material for asphalt concrete
mixture (AC-WC)
