| description | This research aims at listing and describing Arabic lexicon for women based
on their physical characteristics. It also seeks to find out distinctive features of the
lexical units. The other aim is to identify cultural and linguistic factors which
contribute to the richness and variability of the lexicon.
The data is analysed with componential analysis method to find out distinctive
features of the lexicon, and with ethnosemantic method to know about cultural and
linguistic factors which contribute to form the Arabic lexicon.
The result of the research shows that Arabic lexical units for women based on
their physycal characteristics consist of words, whether added by gender marker or
not. The lexemes are classified under some physical aspects such as body posture,
condition of skin, face, smell, breast, and vagina. The lexicon is found most abundant
in body posture and vagina domain. The cultural factors which contribute to
variability of the lexicon are polygamy practice, slave market, jawari (pretty women
enslaved by Arab emperors), and literary tradition in Arabic culture. The linguistic
factors includes morphological, syntactical, and semantic aspects namely triliterality
of Arabic language |
