Summary: | The making of ceramic membrane for water filtration from Babels kaolin,
Sukabumis clay, grog (from the waste of broken fireclay bricks) and coal as
organic additive has been done. Composition of coal powder varies from 0, 5, 10
to 50% (in percent of mass of clays mass). The temperature sintering is 1200° C
with rate of sintering 2° C per minute. The process of making sample using dry
press moldings method with cylinder dimension and the pressure is 17,45 Mpa.
The examination of physics and mechanics characteristic is burns shrink, water
absorption, compressive strength and the ability of membrane on reducing the
turbidity of water, whereas microstructure analysis and micros photo using XRD
(X-ray diffractometer) and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopic). The
performance test shows there is a saturation point on 25% composition. The
greatest compressive strength ( 9.08 MPa) belongs to membrane with 0%
composition and the lowest (0.25) MPa is a membrane with 50% composition.
The result from the XRD-test indicates that the major formed-phases are mullite
and quartz, and the minor formed-phase is cristobalite high. From the micros
photo shows that membrane with 45% coal more sintered completely than
membrane with 5% coal (in percent of mass of clays mass).
