Description
Summary:The physical and chemical activation of natural zeolite from Klaten have been done. The physical activation was done by crushing, sieving and submerging the natural zeolite for 24 hours (ZA). The chemical activation was done by hydrothermal treatment at temperature of 300, 400 and 500 C, and it was continued by oxidation at temperature 500 C for 2 hours and the produced samples were called as ZA1, ZA2 and ZA3. Those samples were characterized their cristalinity by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), the TO4 (T=Si or Al) sites by Fourier Transform Infra Red (FT-IR), the Si/Al ratio by Atomic Absorbance Spectrophotometry and the amount of acid sites by gravimetric method of ammonia base. The samples were tested as water adsorbent in water-ethanol mixtures. The contact time and the liquid ratio were varied to establish their influence on the zeolite adsorption capacity to water and separation factor. The description of the adsorption kinetics was studied by Linear Driving Force Model. The analysis by using XRD showed that natural zeolite from Klaten which contained mordenite mineral had no significant crystalinity alteration. Characterization by means of FTIR showed wave number alteration from 1049 cm -1 to 1041 cm -1 for ZA1 and ZA2, meanwhile there was wave number alteration to 1033 cm -1 for ZA3. The analysis by AAS showed Si/Al ratio for ZA, ZA1, ZA2 and ZA3 were 6.05
