Description
Summary:Perjalanan ke Akhirat (PkA) by Djamil Suherman (DS) represented a novel that was originally published as serial stories in Sastra magazine No. 3-7, Year II, 1962. PkA was given second award of the magazine. It was a novel with religious theme containing interesting signs that found responses of both domestic and international readers. The study aimed at uncovering the insight of death, the meaning of life after death through the signs and the moral messages of death found in the novel. It used semiotic-pragmatic theory on the ground that literature works represented meaningful sign system and the the meaning of the signs was given by the readers. It employed semiotic-pragmatic method. At semiotic level the center of the meaning or the key word was the life after death in the novel. Pragmatic level was used to uncover the moral messages of the death based on the meaning of the life after death in the novel. The results of the study showed that the insight of death in the PkA was based on Islamic insight. It was based on al-Quran and al-Hadits suggesting that there would be a life after death, which was the hereafter or the beyond (akhirat). The meaning of the life after death was given through the signs found in the novel, which were death happening, the place and time between death and the Last Judgement (barzakh), judgement day, resurrection, gathering place on the day of resurection (mahsyar), blessing (safaat), the Last Judgement (hisab) and the final determination of heaven or hell. The morals found in the novel were (a) the morals of death happening, which were being patient and sincere or with whole heart and soul in facing death
