description | Banjarmasin City has long been known as a city of a thousand rivers and is thick
with religious nuances. Now, it seems that development is directed to construct
the image of this city as the modern and religious. The symbols of modernity
comes through the malls, cafes, internet cafes, billiard places, with the splendor
and variety of activities that accompany it. On the other hand, the symbols of
Banjarese religiosity were apparent on the presence of mosques and langgar,
complete with the rise of religious activities. All of those are offered to the people,
especially to the youth of Banjar. Apparently, hybridization is result of
negotiation process of the youth in the middle of the crush of values of 'Islam
Banjar' and 'modernity' which are contestating in their various bid.
Hybrid culture apparent in the lifestyle of the youth who live their life as
moslem by active in various religious activities, do not let go of all their interest in
the realities of modern life and take part in the glitzy malls and cafes.
Mosques and malls, for the youth of Banjar, are arenas meeting of
modernity and the Islam Banjar which is evolving and changing. Modernity or the
young Banjarese piety can be seen through what they do, where they go, what
they talk, what they wear, and what media they use, and so forth. They went to the
mall, cafe, karaoke and other entertainment, but remain diligent in prayer and
active to the recitation. In particular, imaging theirself as youth who are seemed
modern and religious in the way they dress, wearing accessories, and how they
articulate themselves in public spaces. In these spaces they present themselves as
young people who 'hanging out but still Islamic'. Those are the lifestyle choices
that they live in welcoming modernity and at the same time assert their identity as
Banjarese.
I did this thesis using the method of qualitative research. To collect data, I
used the method as follows: participation-observation, interviews, and analysis of
library materials. The aim of this thesis is to look at how young people construct
their identity in the context of so rapidly changes and how they become part of
modern life while still assert their identity as Banjarese. |
