| description | The case of brawl frequently occurred between groups of student in
Makassar during the late ten years showed the existence of unresolved intergroup
conflict and resentment feeling continuously inherited. The aim of this
study is to find out a comprehensive picture of brawl behavior between groups of
student in Makassar, particularly on the triggers and latent causes of brawl and
the dynamics of revenge and forgiveness in conflict between groups of student in
Makassar. Subjects of the study were six actors involved in student brawl mostly
frequent occurred between the groups of student from both Faculty of
Engineering and Faculty of Languages and Art at the State University of
Makassar. Data were collected through interview and observation, while the data
collected were analyzed with other sources of data such as polices, witnesses for
brawl, and both printed- and electronic-media news using a triangulation
technique.
Result of the study shows that the triggers of brawl between groups of
student were issues or negative rumors on the behaviors of opponent group,
prejudices on other group when unpleasant things were referred to the related
group, violence to one of the group members, and the destruction of a member�s
property. Meanwhile, the latent causes of brawl between groups of student were
strong group identity, a wrong understanding of Siri na Pacce culture, revenge,
and the low level of forgiveness. Resentment feeling continuously flamed,
because a brawl incident frequently aroused subjective elements in a longer
period of time than objective ones and caused new conflict. Revenge was based
on doctrine committed during orientation days and forgiveness usually impeded
the betrayal feeling of their groups. |
