movement. The area and the people who live around this pondok pesantren
consequently had to receive the same stigma. Nevertheless, unlike in many cases in
Indonesia which were reported to have violent actions and reactions based on
religious matters, the people in Ngruki have never reacted in such violent way to the
pondok pesantren. Some of the factors that made this condition possible are the roles
and functions of its grassroot leaders. The purpose of this research is to find out how
the grassroot leaders perceive the pondok pesantren and to explore what behavior they
perform in order to maintain peace in this area. Field research was done in qualitative
and explorative approach. The main method was in-depth interview. Based on the
findings and primary source analysis, it was found that the grassroot leaders have a
positive perception about the pondok pesantren�s general activities, they saw the
pondok pesantren have positive impact to the society. They perceived that the stigma
could not be generalized to the people around. This perception allows them to feel
secure and therefore they could prioritize other things such as maintaining daily
activities and performing their roles and functions as conveners and facilitators. The
perfomed behaviors were categorized into four clusters: communication, crisis
management, management of the physical environment and quotidian. |
